Every organisation whether private or public, large or small is ultimately judged by what it achieves in relation to its external stakeholders.  In the case of private it is your customers, and in the case of Government it is what is best for your community (please note public servants that the community also includes the business community).

If you do things that don’t add value to the customer or to the community then question yourself why you are doing it.

If you spend time internally discussing internal issues rather than customer needs the question yourself why you are doing it.

Does the internal make you feel safe and comfortable?  Does it create a distraction you need from the reality of what matters?  Are internal issues your excuse?

My experience is most organisations make enough money to be sustainable.  After that they lose their external focus and get caught up on internal issues.

Reminder – the Roman Empire collapsed from within.
