Good working relationships are critical to project success

There have been some interesting articles and press recently in relation to the successful delivery of infrastructure projects in Australia. In particular, there was a terrific article in the Australian Financial Review highlighting the NSW premiers insights around how they cannot deliver their significant backlog of infrastructure projects worth over $80 billion without good working relationships with contractors.

This was off the back of some recent challenging projects where the conventional “fixed price, lump sum” procurement methods have led to challenges around budget, programme and unforeseen costs.

This acknowledgement of what is a significant challenge in our industry by the NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian is outstanding.   We need smarter procurement, greater alignment on delivery of better project outcomes and an understanding of all party’s drivers and expectations to deliver win/win outcomes for all involved.  This was summed up well with a great quote from the NSW premier in the article which was “We know a project is at its best when the interface between government and industry is a positive one”.  This requires us to actively look for ways to lower bid costs during procurement, gain greater alignment on risk allocation and work harder collaboratively to deliver great outcomes so that all parties win long term.

To back this up and the comments made in the article, the NSW government have put out to the supply chain a NSW Government Action Plan “a ten-point commitment to the construction sector”.  This works through the key areas of focus in ensuring the NSW government drive value for money in construction procurement.  We look forward to seeing this plan and its recommendations being implemented.

NZTA Innovation Centre

Kym had the pleasure of undertaking a tour of the NZTA innovation centre located in the heart of Auckland with one of our clients Martin McMullan. NZTA has created the innovation centre to foster transport innovation. The innovation centre is a place where people can share their ideas with the public and receive feedback on them, promoting continued growth of the idea. It is also being used by NZTA and its partners to create an environment for collaboration for solving the biggest transport challenges they are facing.

A recent example of this was the recent hackathon event that occurred that focussed on the theme of saving one more life. It was focussed on a real challenge that NZ is facing around reducing the death of people on their roads and making NZ roads safer.

It is a wonderful example of how our clients are using innovative means to tackle problems differently and collaboratively with industry. More information on this can be found at .

PRINT workshop with the BRS team

BRS recently ran an internal team workshop to work through each of our individual PRINT results.

PRINT is a new tool that BRS has been exposed to as part of the Strategic Coach program that Kym undertakes in Toronto quarterly.

Developed by The Paul Hertz Group, PRINT® is a pyschometric tool that reveal the unconscious motivations that drive a person’s behaviour and actions. Instead of only describing observable behaviours or preferences (as is the case with conventional assessments), PRINT addresses the root cause of persistent issues by uncovering changes needed for sustainable improvement, growth and change.

It is a terrific tool for one on one coaching and also for teams as they get to understand each other’s best self, unconscious motivators, triggers and also understand whether their current role allows them to play to their best self.

BRS looks forward to getting to know the PRINT tool and its applications more as we go down the path of accreditation in this tool.  We plan to then work with our current clients to find opportunities to leverage its insights with their leaders, teams, projects and organisations.
