Assist the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) with the facilitation of the Industry Safety Group. Although supported by DIT, this forum was led by Industry, with attendees comprising of representatives across different contractors. The focus of the group is to ensure a continued focus of safety performance within South Australia, demonstrate safety leadership and to foster an environment that allows for open and authentic conversations around safety issues.

Why they approached us

As the forum was industry led, it was identified that an external facilitator would enable the working group to focus on the priorities identified at the establishment meeting and continue to hold the group accountable over the duration of the program. With passion for safety leadership and having worked with DIT on a number of procurements of infrastructure projects, as well as experience in facilitating similar industry forums, BRS was approached to assist.

Issue 1 - Industry lacked collaboration, sharing of best practices and consistency across sites

Issue 2 - The Department identified the need for Industry leadership in this area and wanted an external facilitator that would enable the working group to focus on the priorities identified and continue to hold the group accountable over the duration of the program

BRS solution:

At the establishment meeting, terms of reference were established, and it was agreed that the Industry Safety Group would meet every two months for two hours. Opportunities identified for the Working Group to address include:

Review and provide feedback on the DIT minimum construction safety expectations;
Influence the transport construction industry’s safety focus and promote safety as a number one priority;
Influence our supply chain to provide leading safety products and services;
Share and leverage safety information pertinent to safe construction;
Collectively share lessons learned and good practice; and
Discuss safety concerns and identify innovative solutions.
